Is my rug really one of a kind ?
Yes, your rug is one of a kind. Every Union Eighteen rug is handmade which means no two will ever be the same. We occasionally make "Sister" rugs which are essentially two to four rugs cut down from one larger rug. Although at first glance they may look alike, you will notice differences from the stitching, to color and texture that make them unique.
How do I clean my rug?
Please read this PDF carefully, it is full of very useful information. Always spot-clean your rug. Never machine wash or otherwise submerge it in water.
Does my rug need any other type of maintenance?
Yes, due to its handmade nature and utilitarian properties, you will find that the rug will settle over time. Much like a wool carpet that pills, loose yarn will eventually work its way out of the rug. This is especially true at the stitched areas where there is less latex binding the fibers together. Although this will not cause your rug to come apart, you may choose to give it an occasional "haircut" until those areas have completely settled. We have found this becomes necessary for a rug after about 6 months in a medium to high traffic area of a home.
What type of foot traffic is my rug best suited for?
Union Eighteen rugs are handmade works of art and should be treated as such. However they also serve a function and are perfectly fine for most areas of your home. Obviously the amount of use they encounter will reflect directly on how quickly they will begin to wear. We suggest the rugs be placed in low to moderate areas of traffic in the home and receive regular maintenance to keep them looking their best.
I noticed some fraying of the "stitched area". Is this normal?
Yes, this is perfectly normal. The stitched areas of the rugs are decorative and do not actually hold the rugs together. If you find that the stitching breaks in an area or frays, do not be alarmed. It is just an evolution of the rug as it settles into your home.
